Purpose
Higher Ed Holdings, LLC and StateU.com (“StateU”) is committed to ensuring the privacy and accuracy of your confidential information. StateU does not actively share personal information gathered from its Web servers. However, because StateU also serves public institutions such as “State Universities”, some information collected from StateU web sites, including the summary server log information, e-mails sent to Web sites, and information collected from Web-based forms, may be subject to the Texas Public Information Act. This means that while StateU does not actively share information, in some cases may be compelled by law to release information gathered from its Web servers.
As part of its commitment to maintain the privacy of its Web users, StateU has developed this privacy statement. The statement has two purposes:
1. To educate users about privacy issues
2. To inform users about specific privacy policies and guidelines employed at StateU.
StateU also complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which prohibits the release of education records without student permission. Although FERPA regulations apply only to students of a post-secondary institution, StateU is equally committed to protecting the privacy of all visitors to our Web site.
Scope
This policy is effective features or data centers of the StateU Website and represents the minimum requirements that must be in place. Individuals or individual areas that have computers and networks may have additional controls and security, but they are in addition to this policy.
Exceptions
The StateU Website may contain links to hundreds of external Web sites. StateU is not responsible for the privacy practices or the content of the external Websites we link to.
Information Gathered by StateU
StateU Web servers may generate temporary logs that may contain the following information:
- Internet address (IP address) of computer being used
- Web pages requested
- Referring Web page
- Browser used
- Date and time
- UIN (unique person identifier for EID-based services only)
The data is used in aggregate by custodians of information technology to tune the Website for its efficiency and is not ordinarily associated with specific individuals. Raw data from the Web server logs is only shared with the custodian of each Web site. Summary reports produced from the logs help Web publishers determine what Web browsers and pages are most popular. For example, if the aggregate reports show a particular Web page is very popular or used more by freshmen than by seniors, publishers might use this information to customize the content of that page and make it easier to find.
Third-party content
Some pages within the StateU.com domain may contain content that is served from external third parties. Please be aware that when you visit StateU.com pages that contain third party content, information such as your IP address, date, browser, and requested page are transmitted from your computer to that third party. StateU is not responsible for the privacy practices of these external third parties.
Security
Although no computer system is 100% secure, StateU has deployed extensive security measures to protect against the loss, misuse, or alteration of the information under our control. These security measures and our systems are routinely audited and updated by StateU security specialists.
E-commerce
Sites within StateU may enable you to pay for products or services online with a credit card. Although StateU makes every effort to ensure that these third parties provide that these transactions are encrypted, StateU is not responsible for the privacy practices of these external third parties.
Digital Millennium Copyright Act
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), described as the most dramatic change to copyright law in a generation, was the 105th Congress's effort to update copyright law for the digital environment. Please be aware that under the DMCA, StateU reserves the right to terminate computing services of users who repeatedly infringe upon the rights of copyright owners.
